What is stored, and where
So your devices can recognise each other, your Mac writes three things into the private CloudKit database attached to your own iCloud account:
- The name of your Mac, so you can tell it apart from other Macs
- A random identifier for that Mac
- A pairing key your Mac generates on first launch, used to sign lock requests
A private CloudKit database belongs to your Apple Account. Apple stores it, your devices read it, and the developer of an app cannot access it. Deleting the app and signing out of iCloud removes this.
What is never collected
LockMyDesk does not collect, transmit, sell or share any of the following:
- Your name, email address, phone number or any other contact detail
- Advertising or device identifiers
- Your location
- Usage analytics, crash reporting or diagnostics
- Anything at all on your Mac's screen
Lock requests
When you lock your Mac, the request contains the target Mac's identifier, a timestamp, and the name of the device asking. It is signed with the pairing key so your Mac can tell a real request from a forged one. On the same Wi-Fi the request goes straight to your Mac and touches nothing else. Otherwise it passes through your own iCloud database and is deleted once your Mac has acted on it.
Bluetooth
If you turn on automatic locking, your iPhone advertises a single identifier over Bluetooth so your Mac can measure signal strength and judge whether you are nearby. No location is recorded, and the signal is not stored or sent anywhere. Only a Mac signed into your iCloud account can make sense of it.
Local network
Your Mac advertises itself over Bonjour on your local network so your phone can reach it directly. This never leaves your network.
Accessibility permission on macOS
The Mac app can ask for Accessibility permission. It uses that permission for exactly one thing: pressing the system Lock Screen shortcut. It does not read your screen, your keystrokes, or anything else. The permission is optional, and without it the app starts the screen saver instead.
Purchases
LockMyDesk Pro is sold by Apple through the App Store. Apple handles the payment and tells the app whether the purchase exists; card details never pass through the app, and the developer never sees them.
Children
LockMyDesk collects nothing, so there is nothing to collect from children either. The app is not directed at children under 13.
Changes
If this policy changes, the date at the top changes with it.
